Hebrew Word Studies

    Faith    'e mu na h
"Feminine of H529; literally firmness; figuratively security; moral fidelity: - faith (-ful, -ly, -ness, [man]), set office, stability, steady, truly, truth, verily."
The Hebrew word translated as faith is אמון , and is pronounced Emunah.
To understand the meaning we have to look at the root word. The Hebrew root aman means firm, something that is supported or secure. The word emunah is derived from the root word aman, meaning firm. When the Hebrew word emunah is translated as faith, there is a misconception of its meaning. Faith is usually thought to mean "knowing", but in Hebrew emunah is a firm action. To have faith in the Sovereign is not knowing that He exists or knowing that He will act. It means rather that the one with emunah will act with firmness toward the Sovereign's will. This means he wants the Sovereign's will because he knows the Sovereign's will is life-ward and leads him on the correct path.
As can be readily seen, the "literal" root meaning of the word "faith" in Hebrew is "firmness."

    H529
    H529 -     אמוּן   'êmûn  -  ay-moon'
From H539; established, that is, (figuratively) trusty; also (abstractly) trustworthiness: - faith (-ful), truth.
    Believe, Faithful,  Established, Sure,
    Aman
    H539
    H539 -   אמן    'âman   aw-man'
A primitive root; properly to build up or support; to foster as a parent or nurse; figuratively to render (or be) firm or faithful, to trust or believe, to be permanent or quiet; morally to be true or certain;  to go to the right hand: - hence assurance, believe, bring up, establish, + fail, be faithful (of long continuance, stedfast, sure, surely, trusty, verified), nurse, (-ing father), (put), trust, turn to the right.
The root word aman is a transitive verb that basically means "to lean upon".  That means it has to have an object.  If you use this word, you must have an object to lean upon.
Abram had to have something he believed in.  This word cannot stand alone.  One can’t believe in belief!  In this case, the object becomes crucial.  What does Abram believe in?
(Gen 15:6)  Abram put his faith (Aman) in the ETERNAL and this was reckoned to him as uprightness(Tzedekah).
Notice the object of Abram’s faith here.  He believed in the ETERNAL.
The Ancient Hebrew pictograph of the word FAITH will give us more understanding of its meaning.
     Faith - Emun
Aleph - a )              Head of an ox strong, power, leader, Father
Mem - m)              Water chaos, mighty, blood
Nun - n)                Sprouting seed continue, heir, son
The Leaders/Fathers Blood Continues in the Heirs.
According to the Ancient Hebrew Lexicon of the Bible, pg 170-171, the "action definition" of the Hebrew word root ('e mu na h) is "Firm." The pictograph (Ancient Hebrew letters in picture form) shows a picture of water or other liquid such as "blood" together with a picture of a seed representing "continuance." Combined these symbols mean "blood - continues." In general terms, it means that each species (kind) continues by passing its blood to the following generation, which comes from the parents. It also conveys the idea of strength (firmness) through the what the parents taught. Torah is what every parent should teach/pass on to their children.
There are other words that are derived from the root Aman:
  1. Amen -"amen" - used 30 times ex. Psa. 106:48
  2. (Psa 106:48)  Blessed be The ETERNAL, the Sovereign of Yeshurun, from all eternity and for ever! Let all the people say, 'Amen'.
  3. Emet -"truth" - used 127 times ex. Isa. 38:18
  4. (Isa 38:18)  For the nether-world cannot praise Thee, death cannot celebrate Thee; they that go down into the pit cannot hope for Thy truth.
  5. Emûnâ - "faithful" - used 20 times Isa. 1:26
  6. (Isa 1:26)  And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning; afterward thou shalt be called The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
